Lead Park Maintenance Worker - Parks (Finance)



The County of Riverside seeks candidates to fill positions throughout Riverside County. A list of eligible candidates will be established to fill current and future vacancies .

The Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District is seeking a Lead Park Maintenance Worker - Parks at Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park in La Quinta, with additional responsibilities at Mayflower Regional Park in Blythe, as well as other district parks as needed.

The Lead Park Maintenance Worker plays a vital role in the upkeep and repair of park facilities, equipment, and vehicles across Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park and Mayflower Regional Park. This selected candidate will oversee all aspects of grounds and facility maintenance, including plumbing, irrigation, carpentry, and mechanical work. With a strong background in outdoor and grounds maintenance, the incumbent will effectively plan, assign, and review daily and long-term projects, while also coordinating resources, training staff, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols and maintenance standards. In addition to hands on maintenance duties, the incumbent serves as a key liaison for park visitors, addressing concerns, promoting a safe and welcoming environment, and enforcing park regulations. This role demands both leadership and technical skill, as it involves leading staff performance, maintaining detailed reports, and implementing preventive maintenance programs to support the long term care and functionality of both regional parks.

Both parks include large lake areas, making irrigation a key maintenance priority. Candidates must have experience with complex irrigation systems, including controllers managing up to 100+ stations. The most competitive candidates will be skilled in programming, adjusting, and troubleshooting irrigation systems to ensure efficient water use and coverage across varied landscapes.

  • CPO (Certified Pool Operator)
  • CPI (Certified Playground Inspector)
  • QAC (Qualified Applicator Certificate)
  • QAL (Qualified Applicator License)
  • Knowledge in Aquatics fabrication

Work Schedule:
  • 4/10 schedule: 40 hours per week with three consecutive weekdays off. Weekends will be part of the regular work schedule.
  • Hours will vary depending on department needs and special events.
  • Must be willing to work holidays and some evening events.

The Lead Park Maintenance Worker - Parks is an advanced journey level classification and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position. This classification is characterized by its primary function to serve in a lead capacity over a crew engaged in maintenance, groundskeeping, cleaning, and minor construction projects for an assigned area. Incumbents assign, perform and review the work and prepare records on personnel, equipment usage and progress. Additionally, incumbents may occasionally perform public contact duties such as answering questions of park users regarding District facilities and informing users of park rules and regulations.

The Lead Park Maintenance Worker - Parks is distinguished from the Park Maintenance Worker - Parks in that the former acts in a lead capacity over skilled and semi-skilled work, scheduling maintenance work, and evaluating quality of work completed.

Their mission is to acquire, protect, develop, manage, and interpret for the inspiration, use, and enjoyment of all people, a well-balanced system of areas of outstanding scenic, recreational, and historic importance.• Assign, schedule, instruct, guide, and participate in the work of a park maintenance crew in the maintenance, cleaning and repair of buildings, grounds and equipment, and in minor construction work.

• Train subordinates to perform the required maintenance tasks, operate equipment and apply safety techniques in the performance of their duties; inspect assigned area and identify and report needed repairs and problems to a supervisor; estimate equipment, man hours and approximate costs of repairs.

• Submit requests for necessary tools and supplies to a supervisor; inform the supervisor on the progress of work and on observed performance and attendance of subordinates.

• Prepare work schedules and recommend work schedule priorities; implement a preventive maintenance system and maintain all related records.

• Inventory equipment, supplies and chemicals; determine chemical, concentration, amount, and method of application of chemical to eradicate weeds and control rodents, under the guidance of a qualified applicator.

• Answer questions from the public regarding park features and available park facilities; inform park users of park rules and regulations.

• Maintain District facilities by mowing, raking, cleaning, fertilizing, and watering park areas; maintain and improve camp and picnic areas by removing brush, weeds and other materials; clear and maintain equestrian trails; remove dead trees and branches by using chain and hand saws; plant and maintain trees; remove trash and debris from areas of responsibility.

• Move docks on lakes when water level changes; clean, sanitize, and service restrooms and other public facilities; clean, maintain, and build picnic tables, benches, camp stoves, fire pits, and similar park facilities.

• Operate a variety of trucks and tractors in hauling trash, dirt and rocks, and in clearing and leveling park areas and roadways.

• Perform minor plumbing, electrical, welding, and carpentry work such as repairing faucets and sprinkler heads, replacing washers, unclogging drains, repairing electrical wall switches and ceiling lights, repairing benches and playground equipment, and replacing broken windows; perform semi-skilled maintenance work in cutting and laying pipe for the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems, painting buildings and equipment, laying bricks and rocks for retaining walls and drinking fountains, and gate fabrication.

• Maintain and perform minor repairs on vehicles.

• Install, repair and maintain fencing, gates, property barriers and signage. OPTION I
Experience: Three years of performing any combination of the following: building or grounds maintenance and repair, debris removal, ranch work, plumbing, carpentry, metal fabrication, electrical, heating and cooling, landscape gardening including irrigation, habitat restoration, light to medium duty tractor maintenance, farming. (Completion of college level courses from an accredited college or university may substitute for up to one year of the required experience on the basis of 30 semester or 45 quarter units equaling one year of experience.)

OPTION II
Experience: One year as a Park Maintenance Worker with the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District.

ALL OPTIONS:

License : Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license is required at the time of application. The incumbent will use a county vehicle to travel Parks in La Quinta, Blythe and throughout the Desert area at Riverside County.

Physical Exposures : The Lead Park Maintenance Worker - Parks role involves extensive hiking, kneeling, bending, standing, using hand tools, climbing, and operating machinery. The position requires working in extreme weather conditions, uneven terrain, handling chemicals, adhering to welding safety protocols, managing high noise levels, and moving heavy objects, tools, and work materials. The incumbent may be exposed to wild and domestic animals, as well as hazardous plants and wildlife such as rattlesnakes, bees, wild boars, mountain lions, dogs, poison oak, and stinging nettles. Occasional exposure to strong or unpleasant natural and environmental odors, such as decaying vegetation, wildlife, or refuse, will occur in outdoor wildlands and park settings.

Some Regional Park and Open-Space District Lead Park Maintenance Worker - Parks positions are designated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) as safety-sensitive.

For positions which been designated by the DOT as safety-sensitive, applicants are required to complete a DOT mandated alcohol and drug-screening. (A positive test or refusal to test during the past two years will disqualify an applicant from consideration for County employment). Reference checks from former DOT regulated employers are also required.

Employees in safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT alcohol/drug testing in the following situations: random, reasonable suspicion/cause, return-to-duty, and post-accident.

Knowledge of: Common tools, equipment and materials used in maintenance work; basic vehicle preventive maintenance techniques.

Ability to: Lead other employees in all phases of maintenance work; read and follow written instructions and write simple reports; perform a variety of routine grounds, building, equipment, and vehicle preventive maintenance and repair; operate equipment and learn procedures and safety techniques used in performing maintenance and minor construction projects; deal courteously and tactfully with the general public.
