Psychiatrist Independent Contractor (DC Licensed) (Healthcare)



The Psychiatrist will provide psychiatric services to individuals enrolled in outpatient services at Volunteers of America Chesapeake and Carolinas. Is position in person with the availability to offer some telehealth services at our DC Hope Center location. This role focuses on serving adults and children living with serious mental illness (SMI), substance use disorder, co-occuring disorders who require structured outpatient care to enhance treatment adherence and recovery. While services are primarily delivered in an outpatient setting, the Psychiatrist may also conduct evaluations and provide treatment in community-based settings as needed. In addition, the psychiatrist will collaborate with the clinic administrator to support clinical and nonclinical staff in their training needs, provide input into CQI and policies for the CCBHC clinic, and represent VOACC in the community as needed. The position requires flexibility and responsiveness to the evolving needs of the population, including collaboration with courts, case managers, and community providers. 

Work Schedule: 18 hours per week

Salary: $11,000 per month (Part-time)

Responsibilities: 

The Psychiatrist will provide the following services: 

  • Conducts comprehensive psychiatric diagnostic assessments and develops individualized, patient-centered treatment plans tailored to clients. 

  • Provides evidence-based psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatment for acute and chronic psychiatric disorders, including substance use disorders. 

  • Monitors psychiatric medications, assesses side effects, and ensures coordination of care for co-occurring medical conditions. 

  • Serves as a key member of the outpatient multidisciplinary team, collaborating with case managers, therapists, legal representatives, and community partners to implement treatment plans that support compliance with court-ordered care. 

  • Provides psychiatric consultation and clinical guidance to treatment team members to enhance service delivery. 

  • Ensures the provision of billable services, including appropriate service authorization, timely clinical documentation, and reconciliation of services in suspense. 

  • Prepares thorough and timely clinical documentation in accordance with agency and regulatory standards, ensuring the documentation of medical necessity and compliance with FSMHC and CCBHC program requirements. 

  • Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives to optimize care outcomes and adherence to best practices. 

  • Meets productivity standards for psychiatric services as established by the organization. 

Qualifications: 

  • M.D. degree with a current and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the District of Columbia. 

  • Must have a CURRENT DC LICENSURE TO BE CONSIDERED

  • Completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-approved General Psychiatry Residency Program and Board Eligibility or Certification in General Psychiatry. 

  • Experience working with individuals with serious mental illness (SMI), forensic populations, or court-mandated treatment programs is preferred. 

  • Must meet the Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) credentialing requirements for psychiatric services. 

  • Must be able to engage clients in person within the community as needed.
