Research Assistant Professor (Finance)

The University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine invites applications for a Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) Facility Manager to oversee operations of its cutting-edge structural biology core housing a JEOL CRYO ARM™ 300 II transmission electron microscope. This is a unique opportunity to lead a high-end cryo-EM facility and support transformative research in biomedical sciences.

The Facility Manager will play a key role in maintaining the microscope and supporting investigators in single-particle cryo-EM, cryo-tomography, and sample preparation workflows.

\nMinimum Qualifications:
\n

    \n
  • Ph.D. in Structural Biology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service.
  • \n
  • Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor.
  • \n
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with cryo-EM, including hands-on experience with 200keV/300 keV microscopes.
  • \n

Preferred Qualifications:
\n
    \n
  • Familiarity with JEOL CRYO ARM™ 300 II or similar direct electron detection systems and cold-field emission guns.
  • \n
  • Expertise in automated data collection platforms (e.g., SerialEM, JADAS, Leginon) and image processing software (e.g., RELION, cryoSPARC).
  • \n
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills.
  • \n
  • Prior experience managing a cryo-EM or imaging core facility.
  • \n
  • Proficiency in cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) and/or cryo-FIB workflows.
  • \n
  • Experience in training and mentoring researchers with varying levels of microscopy experience.
  • \n
  • Background in grant writing, instrument acquisition, and collaborative science.

• Provide user training in cryo-sample preparation, microscope operation, and data acquisition (using SerialEM or JEOL-specific platforms).
• Develop and implement standard operating procedures for high-throughput and high-resolution data collection.
• Collaborate with researchers in experimental design, data processing (e.g., RELION, cryoSPARC), and interpretation of results.
• Troubleshoot instrument performance, coordinate service and maintenance with JEOL engineers.
• Maintain detailed usage logs, billing records, and budget tracking for the core facility.
• Contribute to research proposals, publications, and core facility development plans.
• Organize workshops and educational programs to promote cryo-EM access and literacy within the USF research community. Apply
