Sr Certified Pharmacy Technician, First shift, Research Pharmacy Informatics (Finance)

UC Health is hiring for a full-time Sr Certified Pharmacy Technician for Inpatient Pharmacy at the University of Cincinnati's Medical Center. We are offer a $2,000 Sign on Bonus!!

This is a Sr certified pharmacy technician position working on the UC Health Investigational Drug Service (IDS) team supporting the research portfolio of the UC College of Medicine and UC Health. This position will work specifically on research protocol build coordination in collaboration with interprofessional research teams, IDS pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, and electronic medical record analysts and protocol builders. Overall, this position joins a dynamic, collaborative, and committed research pharmacy team that works across interprofessional research and clinical teams to advance cutting edge drug therapy research and discovery.

The Pharmacy Technician III provides support to pharmacists, clinical pharmacy practitioners, and managers in all aspects of providing pharmacy services. It is the Technician III that helps identify and improve pharmacy operations and serves as a leader in their area of expertise. The Technician III participates in quality improvement initiatives within the department. The Technician III has a history of qualitative consistency and productivity in multiple core areas and works with minimal supervision and guidance.

  • Education: required High School Diploma or GED.
  • License and Certification: Current pharmacy technician registration and certification that is recognized by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy is required.
  • Years of Experience: 2 Years equivalent experience, 3-5 years of experience preferred
  • Required Skills and Knowledge: Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified time periods; work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staff; handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule; set priorities and solve problems; respond quickly to emergency requests; communicate effectively (orally and in writing), and assist in meeting the pharmaceutical care needs of the patient populations served by the organization.

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $20.94/hr.- $26.47/hr.

The actual pay rate for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant's years of experience, unique skills and abilities, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, and other requirements for the position.

  • Unit Dose - Includes packaging, filling, and distributing medications. Prepackages medications for use in unit dose, outpatient and IV additive drug distribution. Orders drugs and supplies using predetermined stock levels (where available); re-stock shelves.
  • Delivery - Includes the transportation of medications and supplies from the pharmacy to areas outside the pharmacy. This includes medication cart delivery, floor stock, and patient specific medications to patient care areas.
  • Computer skills - A basic understanding of pharmacy systems is required (i.e. labels, printer paper, etc.). For example: must have the ability to type and print labels from site pharmacy systems (e.g. Epic, etc.) and other site-specific pharmacy systems.
  • Automated Dispensing machines (if available at site) - Ability to sign in, load, refill, remove, print reports, and understand the basic operating procedures for the Automated Dispensing machines and related systems. Identify and communicate discrepancies to appropriate personnel.
  • Pneumatic tube (if available at site) - Able to operate the pneumatic tube station. Able to prioritize medications and coordinate their distribution to the floors.
  • Medical terminology - Understands and can communicate with other healthcare professionals using basic medical terminology. This includes understanding brand and generic pharmaceutical names and the hospital formulary system.
  • Parenteral Products - Using aseptic technique, prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile products (including chemotherapy at designated sites), fills syringes, and reconstitutes small volume injectable pharmaceutical for subsequent check and dispensing by a pharmacist.
  • Compounding - Selects bulk pharmaceutical according to prearranged and pharmacist approved work sheets and prepares final products for subsequent check by a pharmacist.
  • Answer front window, Pharmacy door and telephones

Train and/or specialize in at least two of the following areas (not all areas are available at every site)

  • Robotic/Automated Equipment - Must be able to operate robotic equipment within pharmacy, including but not limited to a dispensing robot, automated packager for oral liquids/solids, carousels, etc. and appropriately order and restock products when needed
  • Inventory management software - must be able to utilize provided software to assist with inventory management within the central pharmacy and/or satellites
  • Storeroom function - Able to order drugs and supplies using predetermined stock levels (where available) and stock shelves. Delivers drugs and related supplies. Able to interpret stock request forms, accurately pick stock and deliver to appropriate areas.
  • Controlled Substance Control - Able to understand and operate the current technology involved in the record keeping and distribution of controlled substances. This includes the Automated Dispensing Machines and related systems, and anesthesia boxes. In addition, this individual must be able to resolve discrepancies, and generate reports as needed for managers, Board of Pharmacy, Nursing, or DEA. This individual understands the inventory management system with respect to diversion and cost.
  • Discharge Window - Able to perform functions associated with the cash register, enter and fill medications and payment systems.
  • TPN/CVVH order entry - Able to operate TPN Compounding/Programming system. Completes order entry activities related to TPN/CVVH. Verifies all orders with a pharmacist, informs the pharmacist of any medications that do not seem in line with the patient's condition or previous medications.
  • NICU - Able to perform daily activities in the NICU satellite pharmacy. Activities include preparation of dilutions of medications, preparation of formulas, potential products (including neonatal PICC line attachments and TPN's), extemporaneous oral medications, and ordering and stocking medications.
  • IDS - Works with IDS pharmacist on Investigational drug protocols. Must maintain appropriate records and logs as required.
  • OR - Able to perform daily activities in the OR Pharmacy. Activities include performing specialized billing, narcotic kit preparation and narcotic control. Preparation of ophthalmic injections, irrigations, and other surgical adjuvant solutions. Able to use the Physician medication preference sheet to prepare and process medications. Maintains appropriate inventory supplies. Generates appropriate labels and additional specialized OR forms from secondary computer systems including LAW.
  • Oncology - Able to perform daily activities in the Oncology Pharmacy. Activities include -: preparation of Oncology solutions, compliance with reconstitution standards, understanding of compatibility and stability requirements of chemotherapeutic agents. Understands and complies with chemotherapy preparation standards. Performs Oncology specialized billing (Medicare, indigent patient medication programs). Maintains investigational drug stock. Able to reorder oncology solutions in defined quantities. Identify and provide assistance to Nursing with provision of preprinted protocol maintenance.
  • Outpatient prescriptions - Able to process discharge prescriptions. Activities include, accepting prescription from patient, verifying information such as date of birth and allergies, sending the prescription to outpatient for filling, retrieving the prescription once the patient returns and offer to get a pharmacist for medication counseling.
